Miles College Purple Marching Machine Selected for 2025 Red Lobster HBCU Band of the Year Field
Fairfield, AL — [November 19, 2025] — Miles College is proud to announce that the Purple Marching Machine (PMM) has been invited to defend its 2024 Red Lobster HBCU Band of the Year title. This distinction places PMM among the nation’s top HBCU marching bands and reflects the dedication of the students who carry this legacy with consistency and pride.
Under the direction of Prof. Willie J. Snipes, Jr. and Bryan Nalls, the Purple Marching Machine has grown into one of the country’s most respected ensembles. Their musicianship, discipline, and presence on the field have made them a mainstay at games, national showcases, and community events. For Miles College, this invitation reaffirms the institution’s commitment to excellence across all areas of student life, including the band program.
“The Purple Marching Machine continues to show what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” said Miles College President Bobbie Knight. “Our students have worked hard all year, balancing rehearsals, classes, and the responsibilities that come with being a college scholar. Prof. Snipes echoed that sentiment, noting the band’s readiness to return to the national stage. “The Miles College Purple Marching Machine is honored to be selected as a top contender in the ESPN Band of the Year competition. As Director of Bands, I have made it clear to my students that win, lose, or draw, we are winners not because of a trophy, but because we are recognized among the greatest bands around the country.”
The 2025 Red Lobster HBCU Band of the Year Championship will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. EST at the Gas South Arena in Duluth, Georgia. Miles College is inviting alumni, supporters, students, and the Birmingham and Fairfield communities to join us in Atlanta for an unforgettable showcase. This will be one of the most anticipated battles of the year and an opportunity for the Purple Marching Machine to stand alongside the best in the nation.
