Miles College Dedicates Abascal Student Success Center, Honors Family Legacy, Leadership and Generational Impact
FAIRFIELD, Ala. [March 30, 2026] — Miles College celebrated the dedication of the Abascal Student Success Center on Monday, a reimagined, scaled, and committed student-centered
The program operating in the Learning Resources Center is designed to enhance academic support, strengthen student achievement, and advance the College’s commitment to student success.
The center is named in honor of Manuel Abascal, who joined the Miles College faculty in 1963 after he and his family fled their native Cuba in protest of the country’s communist dictatorship.
Abascal’s journey and commitment to education reflect the spirit of opportunity the center is designed to provide for today’s students.
The day's events began with a master class led by Abascal’s grandson, Mike Suco, President and CEO of Birmingham-based Coca-Cola Bottling Company United, Inc. (UNITED), followed by a student and senior leadership luncheon, and a formal dedication held in the Learning Resources Center.
The Abascal Student Success Center represents a longstanding connection between the Abascal family and Miles College. President Bobbie Knight, the 15th president of Miles College,
emphasized the significance of the moment and its impact on students. “This moment reflects what is possible when legacy and vision unite,” said President Knight. “The Abascal Student Success Center strengthens our ability to support, challenge, and prepare every student for success. We are honored to celebrate this with a family whose story is deeply connected to our institution.”
Suco, who also serves as Chair of the Miles College Comprehensive Campaign, spoke to the personal significance of the investment. “Miles College played a meaningful role in my family’s story, and I am honored to support the next generation of students,” Suco said. “This center creates a space where students can access the resources, guidance, and encouragement needed to reach their full potential. I believe in the work being done here and remain committed to its future.”
Miles College continues to expand its academic offerings, strengthen strategic partnerships, and invest in initiatives that center on student success. The Abascal Student Success Center will serve as a central hub within the Learning Resources Center, providing advising, academic resources, and targeted programming that support persistence, retention, and degree completion.
The dedication brought together students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community partners in a shared celebration of progress and purpose.
