Miles College Biology Club Leads Successful Campus-Wide Food Drive
The Miles College Biology Club, under the leadership of Dr. Willis Lyons, is proud to celebrate the successful development and execution of its Fall 2025 Thanksgiving Food Drive—an initiative rooted in both tradition and Dr. Lyons’ lifelong commitment to addressing food insecurity shaped by social and climate-related challenges. Inspired by these experiences, Dr. Lyons worked with student leaders to launch a drive that not only collected essential goods but also strengthened the College’s culture of service. Mrs. Margaret Ssenkoloto and Dr. Cassandra McCullum, also of the Miles College Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM), did not hesitate in supporting this initiative with equal energy, guidance, and purpose.

Students from the Biology Club and KHEM Clubs rose to the occasion with enthusiasm, organizing collection stations, coordinating logistics, and spreading awareness across campus. Student leadership of the Biology Club included Ashlei Blount, President; Takayla Brooks, Vice President; Akiera Cannon, Secretary; Takeria Watkins, Assistant Secretary; Jakya Payne, Treasurer; and Zaniah, President, Digital Creator Team. Reid Greek, KHEM Club President, and Aye Saye, KHEM Club Secretary, worked with the club, where Ms. Saye donated 72 canned goods. For over a month, students devoted countless hours to decorating and placing donation drop boxes across campus, designing creative signage, packing, and transporting food boxes.

Visitors from across the Greater Birmingham Metropolitan Area, including Wylam, Fountain Heights, and Ensley, supported this endeavor. Overall, this activity served over 50 visitors, accounting for nearly 80 meals. Thanks to this collective work, the Biology Club is preparing for a second day of giving, with Friday, November 21, 2025, set as the tentative distribution date. This expanded effort reflects the College’s ongoing commitment to serving surrounding communities and uplifting those facing need.
