About this Major

The Early Childhood Education major at Miles College prepares you to work with children from preschool to third grade. You’ll graduate with a Bachelor’s degree along with Alabama’s beginning-teacher certification — ready to create an engaging learning environment for young children in today’s world. The program gives you a foundation in child development, an understanding of effective curriculum and instruction, and the skills to meet the needs of a variety of early learners.

Program Highlights

  • Graduate with a Class B Teacher Certification from the State of Alabama — the state’s initial certification for beginning teachers — as well as your degree.
  • Take specialized courses tailored to the needs of young children.
  • Engage in supervised field experiences and an internship in an urban, suburban, or rural placement.

Outside the Classroom

Practice your classroom skills. All Early Childhood students complete required anchor observations and field experiences — each semester, you’ll be placed over a three- to four-week period in urban and suburban classrooms.
Get internship experience. This 16-week internship is your capstone experience for the program. You’ll be assessed during two eight-week school placements, preparing you for induction into the education profession.

Join the International Honors Society in Education. Kappa Delta Pi is a prestigious organization that includes the world's best and brightest scholars and practitioners in education. High-performing students may be invited to join, giving you many opportunities for enrichment and lifelong resources for professional growth and renewal.

Careers in Early Childhood Education

Graduates of the Early Childhood Education Program with a degree and certification in Early Childhood Education can teach in a public, private, or charter school. You can also serve as  a lead teacher or early childhood center director in a preschool school setting.

Some graduates of the program go on to study for their Masters in graduate school, or to work with the State Department of Early Childhood or a non-profit organization focusing on the early childhood years.
