Miles College Educators Preparation Program Earns National “A” Rating
Miles College is proud to announce that its Educator Preparation Program has received an “A” rating from the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), placing it among the nation’s leading teacher preparation programs and among Alabama’s highest-performing institutions in preparing future educators to teach reading effectively. According to a recent national review, Alabama significantly outperformed the national average, with 90% of reviewed teacher preparation programs earning an A or A+ rating compared to 53% nationally. Miles College was recognized among the institutions receiving an“A” designation.
This recognition reflects Miles College’s commitment to preparing highly qualified educators equipped with the knowledge, skills, and evidence-based practices necessary to ensure every child can read, learn, and thrive.
“This achievement affirms the outstanding work of our faculty, students, and educational partners who are committed to transforming lives through literacy,” said Bobbie Knight,“Miles College President. “As Alabama continues to lead the nation in implementing the Science of Reading, Miles College is proud to be preparing educators who will impact generations of learners across our state and beyond.”
The NCTQ review evaluated whether teacher preparation programs effectively teach the five essential components of scientifically based reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Programs receiving an “A” rating demonstrated comprehensive coverage of these critical literacy components while avoiding instructional practices that research has shown to be ineffective.
For Miles College, this recognition represents more than a grade; it reflects a mission.
“Our goal is not simply to prepare teachers,” said Miles College Provost Tonya Perry. “Our goal is to prepare transformational educators who can unlock opportunity, strengthen communities, and ensure every child has access to the power of literacy. This recognition demonstrates that Miles College is helping lead the future of education in Alabama.”
The achievement also aligns with Miles College’s broader vision of educational excellence, workforce readiness, and innovation. Through partnerships with global companies, school systems, industry leaders, and educational organizations, Miles continues to invest in preparing graduates who are ready to meet the evolving needs of students and communities.
