FAIRFIELD, ALABAMA -- Like many institutions in the State and across the nation, Miles College has found it necessary to take extreme measures to reduce cost and cut expenses as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the institution. The loss of revenue and increased expenses associated with the migration to fully on-line classes for the remainder of the spring semester has greatly impacted the College’s budget. The CARES Act funding has been extremely helpful however, those funds are inadequate to cover the rising costs associated with COVID-19. We are doing everything we can to minimize the impact to the hard-working faculty and staff members of Miles College, but we must make some painful but necessary decisions.

Effective today Miles College is implementing expense-reduction strategies resulting from the financial impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The College is announcing limited, temporary furloughs. We are hopeful that those furloughs will not exceed six weeks. All employees that are furloughed will receive their full benefits and will be able to file for unemployment compensation.

In addition, President Bobbie Knight asked all cabinet members to examine their organizations to identify more permanent reductions. Recommendations were made to eliminate some positions and implement layoffs resulting from those changes. As a result, a limited number of layoffs are necessary and will be effective on Monday, June 22, 2020.

While these decisions are difficult, we remain focused on our mission to educate, motivate and prepare students for the future.

Miles College, founded in 1898, is a premier liberal arts institution located in metropolitan Birmingham within the corporate limits of the City of Fairfield. The noble founders of the institution saw educated leadership as the paramount need in the black community. Miles, which is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and accredited by Commission on Colleges for the awarding of Baccalaureate Degrees, is the only four-year institution in historic Birmingham, Alabama designated as a member of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
