Haisten’s clutch homer lifts Miles to SIAC championship

 

At Hampton, Ga., trailing 4-2 going into the top of the seventh inning Sunday, the Golden Bears rallied for three runs – highlighted by a two-run homer by Katie Haisten – to claim the 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

Miles (29-26), which gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs, won its first league championship since 2009.

The Bears’ comeback began when Kayla Cox singled and moved to the third on Tiffany Roberts’ double.Cox scored on Amanda Talley’s sacrifice fly, which set the stage for Haisten, named tournament MVP.

Kayla Bownmaster, who earned the win in relief, allowed only one hit in the bottom of the seventh.

Joining Haisten on the all-tournament squad from Miles were Talley, Tiffany Roberts and Terri Roberts.For Stillman (35-14), Ashley Savage and Gabrielle Quarles made the tournament honor roll.
