Division of Communications

Overview

With concentrations in digital journalism, integrated public relations and graphic design, this division prepares you for meaningful employment in an age of global connectivity. Coursework invites you to make rigorous intellectual inquiry as you learn mass media skills.

Concentrations

  • Learn how to create and share messages that shape perceptions of public figures and companies. With these skills, your career options include public information roles, special events management, social media management, freelance writing and more.

  • Learn the art of 21st-century storytelling and news production through courses such as digital video, broadcast news writing, and news producing and presenting. Degree in hand, your career path could include reporting, videography, news production, digital content management and more.

  • Combine images, words and ideas to effectively convey information to an audience, whether it’s for a streaming site or print publication. Courses such as digital image manipulation, logo design and drawing, and web site development prepare you for careers such as graphic artist, web developer, multimedia animator and more.

Opportunities

Clubs & Organizations

The Communications Club

Go beyond the classroom to get involved in forums, workshops and training sessions involving professionals in the field. Other activities include fundraisers, communications conferences and outings, and participation in outreach and community programs. 

Miles College Association of Black Journalists

An affiliate student chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, this club connects students to scholarships, internships, mentorship programs, multimedia short courses, and networking with professional journalists. You’ll help host and organize educational programs, visit local high schools, and work on community service projects.

The Milean

Produced three times per semester, this campus student newspaper develops your skills in all aspects of print journalism: layout, design, photography, reporting and management.

MC-TV:Studio

This cable access program is a news magazine staffed by student on-air talent in both pre- and post-production roles. Programming highlights entertainment and informative events as well as happenings on campus and in the community.

Lambda Pi Eta

This national honor society recognizes, fosters and rewards outstanding scholastic achievement in mass communication. Get access to professional development opportunities, and discuss and exchange ideas in the communications field.
