Miles College is seeking a dynamic, motivated, and collegial Assistant or Associate Professor of History with a strong commitment to the mission of the Office of Academic Affairs and the College. Miles College is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and accredited by Commission on Colleges for the awarding of Baccalaureate Degrees, is the only four-year institution in historic Birmingham, Alabama designated as a member of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).  Miles College is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) higher learning institution.  The College is one of only 39 HBCUs to have the designation of a United Negro College Fund (UNCF) institution.


Responsibilities: The Assistant or Associate Professor of History sets and leads the vision, goals, and objectives of the College, Office of Academic Affairs and and fulfills the mission of the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, innovative delivery of instruction, student recruitment, participation in divisional and college activities, committee assignments, institutional effectiveness goals, and professional development, as well as overall support of college programs and student organizations.


Required Education and Experience


  • Master's or Doctorate degree in History
  • Teaching experience preferred, preferably 2 or 3 years




Preferred Qualifications      

  • Teach 4 (3hr) courses a semester
  • Be able to teach a wide range of history courses, including Introduction to Western Civilization, and other courses in one's specialty.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested, such as maintain 10 office hours per week, advise students, participate in assigned committees, attend and/or participate in conferences, including preparing papers, serve as faculty advisor to student organizations as requested.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Stay current in their subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops.
  • Knowledge of trends, issues, and accepted practices relevant to veterans and higher education
  • Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook
  • Excellent diplomacy, customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, accompanied by strong attention to detail
  • Skilled in developing and delivering reports and presentations
  • Ability to deliver excellent written and oral communication in a manner appropriate to the audience
  • Ability to work through processes quickly and prioritize responsibilities
