Upward Bound

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

The Miles College Upward Bound Project has been in operation for more than 40 years. Currently, the program serves 75 students who attend Jefferson County high schools.

During the Academic year, Upward Bound (UB) participants come the Miles College campus on Saturdays for tutoring, social, cultural and academic advising, special activity sessions and counseling. The special sessions may include group communication and skill development exercises. Students who regularly attend Saturday classes are invited to participate in the Summer Residential Session held on the Miles College campus. Students live on campus, attend academic and elective classes and experience all aspects of the college environment.
