To audition for the Music Major you will need to
perform the following:
- Major Scales and Arpeggios,
to be played flawlessly at a tempo determined
by the candidate. Normally, two octaves will
be expected. Singers
should be prepared to sing scales using vowels
for range determination
- You will be asked to perform three pieces in
contrasting styles and moods to show the depth
and breadth of playing. For example, you may play
a slow piece to show off phrasing and lyricism,
a fast piece to show off technical playing, and
a third piece with a contrasting style. Consider
representing major style periods, including the
baroque, classical, romantic, and modern era
Skills and qualities that will be considered:
- Playing or singing with a characteristic tone
- Using correct fingerings
- Deportment
- Musicality and Stylistic awareness
- Pitch
- Tone quality
The audition also requires a short interview. For
the interview, the music faculty will look for evidence
of a good attitude, a strong work ethic, and a willingness
to excel as a musician.
The audition may in part determine your eligibility
for scholarship aid.
