“The
Sphinx is a symbol of wisdom, a definite suggestion
of the silence that is power; of the wisdom that
neither boasts nor proclaims itself.” For
100 years, Miles College has continued its mission
of educating and molding the minds of tomorrow's
leaders. Now, the college's future rests on the
shoulders of its newly appointed president, Dr.
George T. French, Jr., President French succeeds
the late Dr. Albert J.H. Sloan, II, who died in
November of last year after a long illness. Dr.
French had served as Interim President for the institution
since December 14, 2005.
|
The
announcement was made by the Board of Trustees,
after a unanimous decision. President French
accepted the position and the challenge to
continue building on his predecessor's vision
while adding his own. |
Dr.
French has worked at Miles College for nearly
10 years. Now, he will serve as the college's
14th President. Before serving as Interim President,
Dr. French was a member of the President's Cabinet
as Director of Institutional Planning and Development.
He directed the offices of Alumni Affairs, Federal
Contracts and Grants, Title III, Institutional
Research and Effectiveness, Congressional Relations,
Public Relations, Videography and Long-Range Planning.
However, his chief responsibility was to raise
money for college. |
Under
Dr. Sloan's leadership, Dr. French helped lead
the largest Capital Campaign Fund Drive in the
history of the college, raising 12 million dollars.
Dr. French, and Campaign Chair, Dr. Kirkwood
Balton efforts placed Miles on sound financial
footing. He also was a driving force behind
the recent construction projects totaling nearly
24-million dollars in renovations and new buildings
across campus.

|
A
native of Louisville, Kentucky, President French represents
a long line of past Miles Presidents who were members
of the clergy, having served as pastor with CME churches
around the country. A minister, scholar, family man,
and now college president, Dr. French embodies the
ideal of W.E.B. Du Bois' legendary "Talented Tenth." |
