Honors Curriculum Goals
 
The Honors Curriculum is a dynamic liberal arts program that is interdisciplinary in content. It employs conventional and heuristic approaches to provide breadth and depth of academic involvement. Specifically, the Honors Curriculum will systematically:
  • Encourage the independent pursuit and appreciation of intellectual achievement
  • Provide Honors seminars on campus and at neighboring campuses
  • Reinforce and cultivate critical reading, writing, and thinking as tools for receiving, sharing, and clarifying knowledge
  • Address fundamental issues in ethnicity and world affairs
  • Offer both-in-state and out-of-state conferences
  • Provide opportunities for ethical awareness and leadership
Honors Curriculum Accomplishments
 
The Honors Curriculum initiated, and led the 1st Annual Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. A total of $12, 500 was raised.
 
Attended and presented several scholarly papers in various conferences in the U.S. and Europe.
  • The Honors Curriculum students participate in peer tutoring.
  • The Honors Curriculum students participate in community programs like Junior Achievement, where students go into local elementary classrooms to serve as educators/mentors.
  • The Honors Curriculum conducts a mentoring program within itself to help with retention. Every Honors Curriculum freshman is paired with upper class students.
The Honors Curriculum Program conducts leadership workshops weekly.
 
Honors Curriculum Membership
 
A student must meet the following conditions to be accepted into the Miles College Honors Curriculum.
 
Incoming freshman:
  • Recipient of Presidential, Dean A, or Dean B scholarship
Continuing and Transfer Students:
  • GPA of 3.2 and above
  • Completion of an admission application which includes
    an essay of intent
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Interview by the Honors Curriculum Director
Continuing Eligibility:
  • A student must maintain a G.P.A. of 3.0 to stay eligible as a member of the honors curriculum. A student whose GPA drops below 3.0 will be put on probation for one academic year. The student regains eligibility as soon as the GPA requirements are met. Failure to meet the GPA requirement, after one year, will lead to suspension from the honors curriculum.
  • All Honors Curriculum students must participate in weekly meetings, workshops, seminars, and be active in campus activities to maintain active status in the Honors Curriculum.
Honors Curriculum Privileges
 
  • One key privilege is the designation of “Honors Scholar,” stamped (upon the completion of a minimum of 18 honors hours) on all college transcripts.
  • Student members and the faculty leadership of the Honors Curriculum will attend off campus academic and cultural enrichment activities, including Honors conferences and seminars, within and outside the United States of America.
  • Students will be introduced to the emerging global economy.
  • Honors Curriculum members will be given the privilege to officiate at special programs throughout the year. Programs may involve international guests/ important scholars.
  • Students will participate in a plethora of cultural enrichment activities.
  • Honors students will assist with the College’s enrollment management efforts by visiting high schools.
  • Students will receive pre-professional leadership training.
  • Students will be given a special on-campus Honors Curriculum student area for seminars, meetings, and collaborative projects. Senior Honors Curriculum projects will be given campus recognition.

  • Special Honors courses
  • Opportunities for internship with major corporations
  • Participation in Emerging Leaders Workshop
