The Division of Humanities offers a major in English. The English major is a program which affords the options of earning a liberal arts degree in English or a Bachelor of Science degree in Language Arts Education, with the State of Alabama Class B Secondary Teaching Certificate. A student is eligible for the Bachelor’s degree in any of the two areas upon satisfactory completion of a prescribed General Education Program of the College and the specific requirements of the Humanities Division. A total of 127 hours is required for a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. In addition to the two major programs, the Division offers an English minor, Music minor, and Religion/Philosophy minor.

  • To develop effective communication skills
  • To heighten creative and artistic sensibilities.
  • To develop an awareness that heightens sensitivity to the human condition.
  • To develop the ability to think critically and independently in academic and non-academic situations.
  • To help students examine and clarify moral and ethical values.
  • To develop in liberal arts students the knowledge and attitudes necessary to participate productively in careers of their choice.
  • To develop an understanding of the African-American experience in relation to the larger American experience.
DIVISIONAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES  
A student must earn 40 semester hours in upper-level English courses for a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. All students earning a Bachelor of Arts degree must take six hours of a foreign language.
