Student Advising
The Divisional instructors advise students throughout Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. Faculty members post office hours on his or her office door at the beginning of each semester. They give a copy of their posted office hours to the chair who assigns the secretary to produce a schedule of office hours and teaching schedule. It is distributed among the faculty to aid in timely referral of students to their respective advisors. The office of Counseling, Advising and Testing requires faculty campus wide to fill out a form that also includes office hours. It distributes to all faculty a master list of office hours to aid when directing students to advisors in other Divisions. Students visit advisors throughout the semester for consultation including problems with their performance in class, the desire to drop or add courses, and other issues. Each instructor has an advisee login sheet that students sign at each advising session. Instructors also indicate on the form occasions when they advise students other than in the office, such as on the telephone or in corridors. The most intensive advising occurs during the first week of the Fall and Spring semesters and near the end of the semesters. At the beginning of a regular semester, students who did not pre-register during the previous semester visit their advisors in the Division. Students are supposed to consult with their advisors before registering online. Since online registration presently allows students to register before they consult their advisor, they typically visit their advisor if a problem occurs. The advisor helps them navigate through the problems. Similarly, students have opportunities to pre-register near the end of regular semesters, at which time, if they experience problems, the advisor provides assistance.
